Sandy Henderson

Born in Kitchener in 1940 and growing up in St. Catharines, Ontario I remember 'doing' art as a hobby since I was a young child. I was thrilled with paint-by-number gift sets at Christmastime; pouring plaster molds, on tables made from orange crates, beside the coal furnace, in our dark, dreary cellar and taking orders from neighbours for painted pink elephants, red breasted robins and colourful flower baskets. Our court house contained the children's library in the basement and an art gallery in the 'attic'. After carefully choosing my books for the week I would sneak through the court house entrance, and secretly tiptoe up the narrow stairs to the 'gallery' and quietly standing on the creaky, wooden floor, and gaze at paintings from 'other' worlds, totally alone with my dreams. I can still remember a particular painting of a shiny, wet, city street, bordered on either side with gray, tall, narrow buildings, being drenched in pouring rain and wonder, “How do they do that?”
For the past twenty years I have painted in Kelowna and surrounding area. Sometimes portraits of people from my past; or a flower; or field of dandelion seeds will catch my attention and I must get my response down on canvas. Capturing the sun on snow is my passion this year.
Through these last ten years membership in the Kelowna Palette Club, I continue my quest to paint what I see and more importantly what I feel. I am honoured to share it with you. I invite you into my world of colour, pleasure in painting and the excitement of wondering, “What's next???
