SALETE DA ROSA

Born and raised in Brasil, Salete was one of 8 children who learned through life to be creative in order to thrive in challenging socio-economic times. Her mother was an inspiration, seen by her children as a woman who would persevere through any situation and had an amazing ability to make something out of nothing.
When thinking back to when and where the passion for art came from, Salete remembers the talent and tenacity of her mother, who unknowingly at the time was offering her children an informal base of arts education. Through her youth she could often be found painting instead of doing her studies. She was drawn more towards the arts than the traditional classes being presented by her teachers. Though her true love was for painting, she had to work to help contribute to her family.
Salete only left her family when she married and it was at this point that she picked up her brush again. Painting was a hobby that she would lose herself in, always a day dreamer. At this point of her life she also explored working with different media, though she always returned to her brushes. During this time she built up a network of creative friends that ranged from writers, to painters to performers. She loved to immerse herself around creative energy, much like that of her family.
As life does, it took a change and in 1989 she found herself with bags packed and on her way to immigrate to Canada with her one year old son; joining her mother and other family members who had immigrated years earlier. Again Salete found herself working hard to provide for her family with little time to spend on her passion, though it was always in her heart.
In 2013 Salete moved from North Vancouver to Kelowna, now on her own. In moving to Kelowna she was moved by the warm welcome from local artists and became inspired to focus on her art. This offered her the opportunity to explore her passion, work on her skills and discover her artistic identity.
Salete works on her art practice at the Rotary Centre for the Arts and has since joined The Federation of Canadian Artists as a supporting member. Salete is currently being mentored by Dennis Weber, exploring her work with oil paints and various techniques. She is excited to be in a space where she is around creative energy once again. She is grateful for the warm embrace from the arts community in Kelowna.
When one looks at Salete's work you can tell there is a story behind each piece. It has been said to have depth, movement and passion. Not afraid of color, Salete loves to put her energy into her work in a way that it will translate to the viewer.
